Title: Assessing Climate Change Adaptation Practices Across Transportation Planning Agencies: A Case Study on the Mid-Atlantic Post Hurricane Sandy

Record Type: Component
Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: As changes in global climate continue, adaptation practices are required to protect society from potential impacts. In order to evaluate climate risk and uncertainty as it correlates to transportation infrastructure vulnerability, Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) are identifying goals and implementation strategies to reduce the impacts of climate change through adaptation initiatives as well as adaptation practices that support mitigation. This research investigates the state-of-the-practice of MPO planning using the Mid-Atlantic region as a case study. A survey is used to identify the level of progress of MPOs with regard to climate change adaptation practices as well as barriers before (2012) and after (2014) Hurricane Sandy. A crosssectional analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) maps the results of the survey and spatially compares regional trends. The results of the case study suggest growing interest in adaptation efforts such as floodplain area designations and efforts to enhance coordination and collaboration as transportation jurisdictions respond to the potential climate change impacts.
