Abstract:

This issue contains 17 papers concerned with human performance, user information, and simulation. Specific topics are as follows: compensatory behavior of drivers when conversing on a cell phone; driver behavior in freeway shockwaves; the effect of different distractions on driving performance for drivers using a touch screen; susceptibility to driver distraction questionnaires; traffic calming measures affecting perceived speed in approaching bends; combining driving performance information in an index score; and the prediction of drivers’ speed behavior on rural motorways. The issue also covers: cell phone resting locations; drivers’ cell phone use behavior; traveler information and demand management for weather-related events; an evaluation of truncated arrow per lane guide signs; and the use of mobile mapping data for behavioral testing of drivers. Other topics include the use of drivers’ jerk profiles in computer vision-based traffic safety evaluations; a microscopic simulation model for pedestrian flow at signalized crosswalks; a novel vehicle motion model considering driver behavior for trajectory prediction and driving risk detection; limitations associated with observing driver distraction; and modeling behavior of bicycles in urban areas.
