Abstract:

This report documents and presents the results of the development of multi-sensor technologies and geophysical software as applied in underground utility detection and location. Three distinct and complementary near-surface geophysical detection methods were considered for research and development. They were multi-channel Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Time Domain Electromagnetic Induction (TDEMI), and initial-step high frequency shear wave seismic technology. The multi-channel GPR and TDEMI prototype systems were fully developed to a practical operating state. Through this research proof-of-concept studies were conducted for developing a high-resolution seismic system; however, a seismic prototype was not actualized. Full-scale tests in combination with computer simulations were applied to investigate and develop these advanced digital geophysical utility mapping systems. These systems were tested and evaluated by a respected Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) firm under real highway construction project conditions. The findings of these studies suggest that these advanced geophysical tools are useful for certain projects to improve upon traditional utility mapping methods.
