Abstract:

Extreme weather test the people and infrastructure that make up transportation systems. This study examined eight recent cases of extreme weather in the United States from the perspectives of transportation operations, maintenance, design, construction, planning, communications, interagency coordination, and data and knowledge management. The case studies cover: Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey; riverine flooding in Iowa; high-intensity rain and tornadoes in Tennessee; high-intensity rain in Washington; Tropical Storm Irene and riverine flooding in Vermont; South Central snowstorms in Alaska; drought and wildfires in Texas; and prolonged heat in Wisconsin. Information was collected for this report through a literature review and interviews with transportation officials.
