This paper presents information on the elevated bridges planned for the retrofit, details on the proposed bridge rail design, and results from the static testing on the bridge rail retrofit design recommended to be used on elevated bridge structures in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Autopistas 25 elevated bridge is located in Buenos Aires, Argentina and is approximately 10 kilometers in length. The new retrofit bridge rail design was designed to meet the requirements for NCHRP Report 350 Test Level 5 (TL-5). Several approved TL-5 bridge railing systems were considered for this project. The California Type 742 Concrete Single Slope Bridge Rail (42 inches in height) was selected for this project. Engineering analyses were performed to determine the required anchorage size and spacing for the retrofit bridge rail to meet the load requirements for TL-5 (124 kips). The retrofit bridge rail was designed and detailed and a prototype test installation was constructed on the actual elevated bridge in Buenos Aires. Full-scale testing was performed on the test installation in June, 2011. The strength of the new retrofit design met the strength requirements for NCHRP Report 350 TL-5.
