Abstract:

VERTICAL DISPLACEMENT OF PAVEMENTS UP TO 0.265 FEET OCCURRED IN OHIO IN 1925-1926. A SERIES OF OBSERVATIONS WERE CONDUCTED UPON PAVEMENT DISPLACEMENT. THE DATA INDICATE THAT NO DEFINITE RELATIONSHIP APPEARS TO EXIST BETWEEN THE DISPLACEMENT OF THE PAVEMENT AND THE MECHANICAL ANALYSIS OF THE SOIL, OR WITH THE VARIOUS CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SUBSOILS. THE NEAREST POSSIBLE CHANCE OF A RELATIONSHIP APPEARS TO BE WITH CAPILLARY WATER: DISPLACEMENT SEEMS TO INCREASE WITH INCREASED CAPILLARITY. THERE APPEARS TO BE A GREATER IRREGULARITY OF DISPLACEMENT ON BITUMINOUS AND MACADAM ROADS THAN UPON BRICK AND CONCRETE ROADS. THE DISPLACEMENT IS DUE TO MOISTURE AND FREEZING. THE RISE AND FALL OF THE PAVEMENTS UPON UNUSED ROADS WERE REMARKABLY UNIFORM FOR EACH YEAR WHEN THE WEATHER CONDITIONS FAIRLY PARALLED THEMSELVES. THE MAXIMUM HEIGHTS OF PAVEMENTS OCCURRED LATER IN 1926 THAN IN 1925, DUE EVIDENTLY TO DIFFERENT WEATHER CONDITIONS. UNDER NORMAL SEASONAL CONDITIONS IN OHIO, THE DISPLACEMENT IS UPWARD DURING THE LATE FALL AND EARLY WINTER AND DOWNWARD DURING THE LATE WINTER, SPRING, SUMMER AND EARLY FALL. IT SEEMS THAT NONREINFORCED CONCRETE SLABS MUST BE CRACKED AND BROKEN MORE AND MORE EACH YEAR DUE TO THE UNEVEN STRESSES LAID UPON THEM BY SUCH MOVEMENTS AS INDICATED.
