APPLICATION OF PLASTICITY THEORY TO SLOPE STABILITY PROBLEMS

Abstract:

A CLOSED-FORM PLASTICITY SOLUTION IS PRESENTED FOR SLOPE STABILITY PROBLEMS IN HOMOGENEOUS SOILS. THE BASIC CONCEPTS AND LIMITATIONS OF THE PLASTICITY SOLUTION ARE DISCUSSED BY COMPARING IT TO EXISTING LIMIT EQUILIBRIUM SOLUTIONS. STABILITY FACTORS COMPUTED BY THE PLASTICITY TECHNIQUE ASSUMING STRAIGHT-LINE, CIRCULAR, AND LOGARITHMIC-SPIRAL FAILURE SURFACES ARE PRESENTED. THESE ARE COMPARED WITH STABILITY FACTORS COMPUTED FROM EXISTING LIMIT EQUILIBRIUM SOLUTIONS INCLUDING THE CULMANN METHOD. DESIGN CHARTS DEVELOPED FROM THE PLASTICITY SOLUTION ARE PRESENTED FOR A USEFUL OF FRICTION ANGLES AND SLOPE GEOMETRIES. /AUTHOR/
