Abstract:

THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION DUE TO A CONCENTRATED LOAD ON A SEMI-INFINITE ELASTIC BODY MAY BE FOUND BY THE BOUSSINESQ EQUATION. LIKEWISE, THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION DUE TO SOME OTHER LOADING MAY BE OBTAINED BY INTEGRATION OF THE BOUSSINESQ EQUATION. EQUATIONS ARE PRESENTED FOR THE DETERMINATION OF STRESSES, VERTICAL, HORIZONTAL OR SHEARING, AT ANY POINT IN A HOMOGENEOUS, ISOTROPIC, ELASTIC SOLID OF KNOWN POISSONS' RATIO WITH THICKNESS BOUNDED ON ONE SIDE BY A ROUGH, RIGID ROCK, AND CARRYING ANY KNOWN NORMAL LOAD ON THE OTHER SIDE.
