Abstract:

This article describes the Trip Optimizer, which is an autocontrol system for locomotives. The Trip Optimizer makes velocity calculations that save fuel by minimizing brake applications for a specific train and track topography. Nearly 2,000 locomotives are equipped with the Trip Optimizer. Tests have demonstrated fuel savings of 3-17%. The system operates on all freight train types with configurations that vary from 800 to 30,000 trailing tons, up to 15,000 feet long, with a horsepower per ton that ranges from 0.5 to 10 HPT.
