Abstract:

In 1992, the U.S. Department of Transportation designated a high-speed rail corridor connecting Washington, D.C., Raleigh, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Since then, North Carolina has received funds to improve at-grade highway crossing safety along its portion of the Southeast High-Speed Rail (SEHSR) corridor. This article describes the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Sealed Corridor Program, which aims to improve or consolidate every public and private crossing along the section of the SEHSR corridor connecting Raleigh, Greensboro, and Charlotte. The enhanced devices and strategies evaluated as part of the Sealed Corridor Program include median separators, four-quadrant gates, and longer gates.
