Abstract:

Maintaining accurate information about grade crossing engineering, as well as operational and safety characteristics, in an easy-to-use information management system could help improve highway-rail grade crossing safety. This article discusses efforts to develop grade crossing information systems that can be used to identify high-risk grade crossings, as well as the most efficient, cost-effective improvements to reduce the risk of incidents. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials has established a technology information group to document and promote state-of-the art grade crossing information systems.
