Abstract:

The 1962 Federal-Aid Highway Act mandated metropolitan transportation planning; federal guidance defined the scope and nature of the technical process, providing training and developing a set of fundamentals, building competency and establishing the foundations of a new practice. The 50th anniversary of this legislation provided the opportunity to provide a sense of that productive period to the current generation of planners. This article provides an introduction to the accompanying feature article and sidebars.
