Abstract:
BITUMEN IS USED TO: (1) WATERPROOF THE INDIVIDUAL SOIL PARTICLES TO PREVENT CAPILLARY ACTION AND (2) FORM ON THE INDIVIDUAL SOIL PARTICLES A COATING OF HARD ASPHALT TO INCREASE STABILITY OF THE AGGREGATE THROUGH THE NATURAL COHESIVE QUALITIES OF THE BITUMEN. THE STATES BELIEVE THAT: FOR EMULSIFIED ASPHALTS, WATER CONTENT SHOULD BE ABOUT THAT REQUIRED FOR THE PLASTIC LIMIT FOR MIXING AND AT THE OPTIMUM FOR COMPACTION. SOAP SHOULD BE USED SPARINGLY. FOR RESIDUAL OILS AND CUT-BACK OILS, WATER CONTENT SHOULD BE ABOUT OPTIMUM FOR BEST RESULTS FOR BOTH MIXING AND COMPACTING. ALL BITUMINOUS MATERIALS CAN BE USED SUCCESSFULLY UNDER THE PROPER CONDITIONS. BITUMINOUS BASES MUST BE SURFACE TREATED SINCE THEY ARE TOO FRIABLE TO WITHSTAND THE TRAFFIC. PRINCIPAL LABORATORY TESTS ARE FOR STABILITY AND ABSORPTION. BITUMEN MUST BE THOROUGHLY MIXED WITH THE AGGREGATE. DRAINAGE IS OF PRIME IMPORTANCE.
