Abstract:
PAVEMENTS HAVE BEEN CONSTRUCTED OF PLANT MIXED BITUMINOUS CONCRETE KNOWN AS TYPE A IN MASSACHUSETTS, CONSISTING OF A MIXTURE OF LOCAL SAND AND ASPHALT WITH A SMALL ADDITION OF STONE SCREENINGS. A HIGHER GRADE OF BITUMINOUS CONCRETE COMPOSED OF WELL GRADED CRUSHED STONE, SAND FILLER, AND ASPHALT (TYPE I ACCORDING TO BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS) COSTS MORE THAN TYPE A. STABILIZED BASES, FOR THIS TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION, HAVE NOT BEEN DECIDED ON, ALTHOUGH PROBLEMS EXIST SUCH AS (1) ESTABLISHING A BASE UPON WHICH TO START COMPACTION, (2) SPEEDING UP THE DRYING TIME, AND (3) FINDING A SPECIFICATION THAT WOULD GUARANTEE CONSISTENT BEHAVIOR OF EMULSIONS.
