Abstract:

AS A GENERAL RULE, THE TAR ACTS AS A WATERPROOFING AGENT AND THE NATURAL BINDER IN THE SOIL SERVES AS THE CEMENTING MEDIUM. IN THE STABILIZATION OF VERY SANDY SOILS, THE TAR ACTS AS A BINDER. IN ADDITION TO THE TAR, SAND OR SIMILAR AGGREGATE IS OFTEN MIXED WITH THE SOIL TO INCREASE ITS BEARING VALUE. A TAR-STABILIZED BASE, HOWEVER, DOES NOT DEPEND UPON GRADATION FOR ITS STABILITY.
