Abstract:

THE REQUIREMENTS OF A GRADED SOIL TYPE SURFACE AND BASE COURSE ARE: STABILITY, TRAFFIC ABRASION, IMPERVIOUSNESS TO RAIN WATER, AND CAPILLARY PROPERTIES. A HIGH DENSITY IS NECESSARY WHERE GRANULAR MATERIALS ARE TO BE USED AS SURFACE COURSES; DENSITY IS NOT IMPORTANT IN BASE COURSE CONSTRUCTION EXCEPT AS A MEASURE OF STABILITY. SEPARATE SPECIFICATIONS WERE ADOPTED BY A.A.S.H.O. FOR BOTH SURFACE COURSES (M-61-38) AND BASE COURSES (M-56-38).
