Abstract:

A STANDARDIZED TEST IS SUGGESTED FOR LABORATORY SLAKING AND A SUGGESTED FIELD TEST. A SOIL THAT SLAKES DOWN EASILY FORMS A VERY POOR SHOULDER SUPPORT FOR A PAVEMENT. IT IS HOPED THAT THE SLAKING TEST WILL BE OF CONSIDERABLE ASSISTANCE FOR DETERMINING WHEN AND HOW TO PROTECT PAVEMENT SHOULDERS. THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE IS SUGGESTED FOR THE SLAKING TEST: (1) USE OF ATTERBERG LOWER PLASTIC LIMIT FOR THE WATER CONTENT AT WHICH TO MIX THE SOIL FOR MAKING BRIQUETTES, (2) USE A PRESSURE OF 1200 POUNDS IN MAKING THE BRIQUETTES, (3) AIR DRY THE BRIQUETTES IN NORMAL LABORATORY TEMPERATURES OF APPROXIMATELY 70 TO 80 DEGREES F FOR 48 HOURS, (4) OBTAIN A THOROUGH DISTRIBUTION OF MOISTURE THROUGH THE SOIL, (5found USE THE RING METHOD OF SLAKING, (6) SLAKE THE BRIQUETTES IN WATER AT A TEMPERATURE OF 68 DEGREES F, AND (7) ADOPT THE TIME IN MINUTES WHICH IT TAKES TO SLAKE THE CYLINGER UNTIL IT FALLS THROUGH THE RING AS THE SLAKING FACTOR.
