Abstract:
Having received funding in February 2012, the California Department of Transportation began converting all roadway lighting fixtures to light-emitting diode (LED) technologies by May 2012. If funding continues in FY 2012-2013, the conversion could be completed by the end of 2014. Among the expected benefits are energy savings of up to 50% for roadway lighting, an expected field life of up to 20 years, a decrease in hours of operation with control systems to turn the lights off when not needed, and an estimated energy use savings of more than 1 billion kilowatt-hours, plus carbon dioxide and carbon reductions of up to 440,000 metric tons, from the expected 67,000 converted fixtures during the 20 years of service life.
