Abstract:

The purpose of this presentation was to clarify issues regarding polyphosphoric acid (PPA) modification of asphalt binders and to help highway agencies make informed decisions on its use. A review was made of the Asphalt Institute (AI) publication IS-220 to provide factual information on the use of PPA. The AI's position on binder modification and PPA is that AI supports responsible modification of asphalt for improved performance and life cycle costs; AI does not endorse any specific or proprietary form of modification; PPA can improve physical properties of asphalt when used correctly and in appropriate amounts; Inappropriate use of PPA can result in problems; There is a need to continue developing performance-related specifications; and There is a need to test modified binder after all additions.
