Abstract:

Maritime means have been heavily used in transporting freight throughout the recorded history. Although the importance of maritime transportation for passengers has decreased in recent decades as a result of the developments in aviation, it is still effectively used for cruises and ferries as well. However demand on maritime for cargo transportation is increasing day by day, resulting in many accidents leading to considerable economic losses and tragic outcomes, such as human casualty and environmental damage. All these factors promoted research to qualify or quantify safety risks in ports or waterways. This paper introduces the concept of risk analysis and reviews much of the literature related to safety risks in the field of maritime transportation.
