Abstract:

Thin gap-graded (TG) and single and double layer porous (SLP and DLP) pavements are reported to reduce the tire-pavement noise (TPN) better than conventional pavement types such as dense graded asphalt and portland cement concrete pavements, but more research is required to compare the acoustic performance of the three pavement types. TG, SLP and DLP slab specimens were prepared in the laboratory utilizing mix design parameters with a wide range of levels (or values) and the acoustic absorption properties of the specimens were measured using the impedance tube method according to ASTM E1050. Nominal aggregate sizes and air void contents showed very minimal effects on the peak acoustic absorption (ápeak) of TG, SLP and DLP specimens. Binder and aggregate types considered in this study showed inconsistent influences on the ápeak of the specimens. Slab thickness did not affect the ápeak of the specimens. The TG specimens showed comparable absorption curves with different ápeak and frequency of the peak absorption. Similar results were obtained for SLP specimens. The 90-mm thick DLP specimens showed two peaks while 70-mm thick DLP specimens showed one peak, demonstrating the effect of pavement thickness on the shape of the absorption curve and frequency of the first peak absorption (fpeak). Negative correlations between slab thickness and fpeak with R2 value of 0.80 indicate that slab thickness has significant effect on the occurrence of fpeak. TG and SLP specimens showed statistically significant difference in acoustic absorption at 1000 Hz. Absorption at that frequency is important on roads with high volumes of car traffic.
