Abstract:

With the rapid development in China's economic sector, the number of novice drivers increased rapidly in recent years, and they have become the high-risk population in traffic accident. The eye movement of drivers has a great impact on traffic safety, but this issue is still relatively poorly understood in China. This study analyzes the eye movement of Chinese novice drivers and experienced drivers through the eye movement data that was collected by an eye tracker on real roads. The following conclusions can be drawn from the research of this paper: 1) The horizontal search range of novice drivers were smaller than that of experienced drivers on urban and suburban roads, and the vertical visual search range of novice drivers was always smaller than that of experienced drivers on the roads of different types. 2) The fixation durations of novice drivers were significantly larger than that of experienced drivers on urban roads and freeways. 3) Generally, the areas of interest (abbreviated as AOI) of novice drivers and experienced drivers in horizontal direction are deflected to the left part of the road. 4) Generally, both novice drivers and experienced drivers have two AOI in the vertical direction. One AOI is the upper front area and the other AOI is the lower front area, and the former have larger proportion. The AOI of experienced drivers are further away than novice drivers.
