Abstract:

This study aims at comparing the curling stresses measured in the field with the stresses calculated theoretically using Westergaard and Bradbury equation. An instrumented concrete pavement section was constructed on National Highway-31 near Siliguri in India. Vibrating wire temperature sensors and strain gauges were embedded into concrete slab to capture the slab response to environmental loading. Transverse strain near top surface at mid slab edge, occurring freely without any restraint, was used as the base strain for calculating the strain component that is responsible for inducing edge stresses due to restrained warping in longitudinal direction. It was observed that the transverse strain increased instantly with the top surface temperature and reached its peak value simultaneously with the peak temperature differential between top and bottom of the slab, indicating non-existence of any restraint in that direction. Strain in longitudinal direction increased rather slowly and attained its peak value 2-3 hours later than the maximum temperature differential condition, indicating the restrained warping along the longitudinal edge of the slab. Measured curling stresses were less than the theoretical stresses during day time when temperature distribution through the depth of the slab is highly nonlinear. Measured values were 60% to 70% of the theoretical values at the time of maximum temperature differentials. During night time, when the nonlinearity is not so predominant, the measured stresses were slightly higher but very close to the theoretical stresses.
