Abstract:
RECOMMENDATION IS MADE THAT MORE RESEARCH BE DONE ON THE CURING OF CONCRETE AND THE USE OF QUICK SETTING CEMENTS. A REPORT ON SNOW REMOVAL IS GIVEN. IT HAS BEEN FOUND IN MARYLAND THAT SNOW CAN BE SATISFACTORILY REMOVED FROM THE PUBLIC ROADS BY HAVING TRUCKS CAPABLE OF CONSIDERABLE SPEED, EQUIPPED WITH PLOUGHS WHICH WILL PUSH THE SNOW FROM THE ROAD AS RAPIDLY AS IT FALLS. THESE TRUCKS ARE STRATEGICALLY LOCATED SO THAT IN THE CASE OF SNOW ALL SECTIONS OF THE HIGHWAY MAY BE COVERED WITH A PLOUGH WITH INTERVALS NOT IN EXCESS OF 2 OR 3 HOURS APART. EQUIPMENT USED IN MARYLAND IS DESCRIBED. EXCELLENT RESULTS WERE OBTAINED FROM ASPHALTIC CONCRETE USED TO RESURFACE OLD CONCRETE ROADS. SHEET ASPHALT, ONE COARSE BITUMINOUS MIX, AMIESITE AND PENETRATION MACADAM HAVE ALL GIVEN SATISFACTORY RESULTS. THE CONCLUSION IS THAT OLD CONCRETE SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED BUT SHOULD BE USED AS A BASE; THAT CONCRETE SHOULD NOT BE PERMITTED TO GET INTO THE CONDITION WHERE REMOVAL WILL BE CONSIDERED.
