The NRC's Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committee on Naval Engineering in the 21st Century reached conclusions and recommendations in five areas: the value of the NNR-NE, the state of science and technology supporting naval engineering, the wholeness of the NNR-NE research portfolio, opportunities for enhancement of research and education, and the effectiveness of the NNR-NE initiative. The conclusions and recommendations are presented in summary form in this Special Report, followed by a more detailed discussion in the body of the report. Appendix A of the report contains a list of the presentations given to the committee at public meetings and workshops; the presentations may be viewed at www.trb.org/PolicyStudies/NavalEngine21Century.aspx. Appendix B contains abstracts of the nine papers commissioned by the committee. The papers provide technical, policy, and historical perspectives on issues important to the study; they are also available at the above website.
