Title: Consideration of Strain at Strength in Evaluation of Sustainable Pavement Material
Accession Number: 01333090
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Pavement sustainability is related to the reduction in consumption of valuable natural resources and, at the same time, to the maximization in the reuse of existing natural resources within the road works. Consequently several recycling techniques for new surface and/or structural layers are used for sustainable and durable pavements. These techniques include the Cold In-place Recycling (CIR) technology with foamed asphalt, which is a successful method for pavement rehabilitation. CIR using foamed asphalt has a number of advantages, as it encourages green processes, practices and products towards sustainable outcomes while providing the transportation infrastructure and services with strengthened pavements. The present research accomplishes an investigation of the in-situ properties of asphalt pavement which has been in-depth cold in-place recycled using foamed asphalt as a stabilization treatment for base works. For this purpose a field testing program was carried out that includes strain measurements and deflection records. Collected data is analyzed in terms of the critical strains in the structure of the recycled pavement. The analysis results are elaborated with reference to the pavement design strain values and useful conclusions are reached about the performance of the recycled material. In particular, due to the low strain values, these results produce evidence in support of the statement that the recycled material, in addition to the environmental benefits of CIR method, provide the adequacy of pavement performance in terms of stress and deformation characteristics.
