Title: LOAD TESTS ON POST-TENSIONED PAVEMENT SLABS

Abstract: DATA ARE REPORTED ON STATIC LOAD TESTS CONDUCTED ON THREE CONCRETE SLABS WHICH HAD BEEN POST-TENSIONED BY THE USE OF STEEL STRANDS. THE PRINCIPAL VARIABLE WAS THE AMOUNT OF PRESTRESS. TWO SLABS HAD ONLY LONGITUDINAL PRESTRESS ONE OF 180 PSI AND THE OTHER OF 360 PSI. THE THIRD SLAB HAD BOTH 360 PSI LONGITUDINAL AND 70 PSI TRANSVERSE PRESTRESS. STATIC LOADS WERE APPLIED AT BOTH INTERIOR AND EDGE LOCA- TIONS WITH MAGNITUDES SUFFICIENT TO DETERMINE SLAB DEFLECT- ION & MOMENT CHARACTERISTICS IN BOTH THE ELASTIC & PLASTIC RANGE. MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE TO DETERMINE STRAIN AND DEFLECTION PROFILES OF THE SLAB AND THE PRESSURE ON THE SUB- GRADE. DETERMINATION WAS MADE OF THE EFFECT OF PRESTRESS LEVEL ON STRAINS AND DEFLECTIONS CAUSING BOTTOM AND TOP SURFACE CRACKING FOR EDGE AND INTERIOR LOADING, AND INTER- PRETATION WAS MADE OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE DATA RELATIVE TO THE CRITERION FOR FAILURE OF A PRESTRESSED PAVEMENT.
