Accession Number:

00205153

Record Type:

Component

Abstract:

INTRODUCTION OF FREEWAYS AND THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM HAS FACILITATED THE PLANNING AND EXECUTION OF PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE. MUCH REPAIR-ORIENTED MAINTENANCE CAN BE AVOIDED BY ACTING IN ACCORDANCE WITH FORESIGHT. HOWEVER, ONE RESULT HAS BEEN THAT ROADSIDE MAINTENANCE HAS BECOME MORE SPECIALIZED. IN MASSACHUSETTS ABOUT 25% OF THE HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE BUDGET IS SPENT ON ROADSIDES. TYPICAL LANE-MILE COSTS ARE CITED.
