THEORY OF FLOW THROUGH SHORT TUBES WITH SMOOTH AND CORRUGATED SURFACES AND WITH SQUARE EDGED ENTRANCES

Abstract:

AN INVESTIGATION IS DISCUSSED WHICH ESTABLISHED THE FORMULAS OF DISCHARGE FOR CULVERTS OF CONCRETE AND CORRUGATED METAL PIPES WITH SQUARE-EDGED ENTRANCES. THE FLOW IN THE SHORT TUBE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE SEGMENTS: THE ENTRANCE SEGMENT WHERE LOSS OCCURS IN THE SURFACE OF DISCONTINUITY OF THE GRADUALLY VANISHING VENA CONTRACTA AND IS INDEPENDENT OF THE SIZE OF THE TUBE; THE BOUNDARY LAYER SEGMENT IN WHICH THE TURBULENT BOUNDARY LAYER DEVELOPS; AND THE TURBULENT LAYER. THE EFFECTIVE COEFFICIENT OF RESISTANCE IS FOUND BY EXPERIMENTAL METHODS. THE MOMENTUM LAW, TOGETHER WITH THE SUPPOSITION OF A NON-DISSIPATIVE CENTRAL CORE AND THE CONDITION OF CONTINUITY, ENABLES THE DETERMINATION OF THE VARIATION OF BOUNDARY LAYER THICKNESS AND WALL SHEAR WITH DISTANCE FOR A GIVEN RELATIVE ROUGHNESS. THE FORMULAS FORMED WERE COMPARED TO THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS WITH SATISFACTORY AGREEMENT.
