IN 1961 THE STATE OF MAINE WAS PRESENTED A MAGAZINE AWARD FOR HAVING "AMERICA'S PRIZE HIGHWAY." THE ROAD SO HONORED---INTERSTATE 95---WAS DESIGNED THROUGHOUT TO INCORPORATE THE PRINCIPLES ENUNCIATED IN THE "POLICY ON LANDSCAPE DEVELOPMENT FOR NATIONAL SYSTEM IN INTERSTATE AND DEFENSE HIGHWAYS" ADOPTED BY AASHO ON 25 JANUARY 1961. DESIGN FEATURES ARE DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO SAFETY, DRIVER COMFORT, CONSERVATION, AND AESTHETICS.
