THE VARIOUS FACTORS THAT DETERMINE THE FORMATION AND PERMANENCE OF JOINTS BETWEEN ASPHALT AND MINERAL AGGREGATES ARE DISCUSSED. THESE INCLUDE THE EFFECTS OF ADSORBED FILMS, PREHEATING THE STONE, WEATHERING, PORES AND CRACKS, DUST ON THE STONE SURFACE, ASPHALT SURFACE ENERGIES AND VISCOSITY, AND SURFACE-ACTIVE AGENTS. MECHANISMS FOR SPREADING, STRIPPING, BLISTERING, PITTING, PORE PENETRATION, AND DIFFUSION ARE ELUCIDATED. NEW DIRECTIONS FOR RESEARCH ON THE FUNDAMENTAL PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT-WATER-AGGREGATE SYSTEMS ARE SUGGESTED. /AUTHOR/
